Indian crypto investors are facing a new type of cryptocurrency scam involving fake job recruiters who deceive their potential victims. Naved Alam, a 22-year-old from Pune, India, lost INR 2.5 lakhs (approximately $3000) of his crypto funds after interacting with these scammers.

Alam shared his story to raise awareness and prevent others from falling victim to similar schemes. He was contacted by a user named β€˜crankybugatti’ on X offering a role as a product designer for a web3 communication app called β€˜SocialSpectra.’

After moving the conversation to Discord, the scammers complimented Alam’s work and proceeded to an HR interview. They sent him a link for onboarding, which turned out to be spyware disguised as an international communication app. This malware drained Alam’s Phantom wallet and liquidated his staked assets on Kamino Finance.

Alam expressed his frustration at losing $3000 to scammers who exploit unsuspecting individuals seeking genuine opportunities. Despite reaching out to the fraudster and receiving false promises of reimbursement, Alam remains skeptical of any resolution.

This incident occurred amidst increased regulatory efforts in India to combat illicit activities involving cryptocurrencies. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) recently charged 299 entities under anti-money laundering laws for defrauding investors with promises of crypto mining investments.

Similarly, South Korean authorities dismantled a scam that defrauded victims of over $4.1 million by offering unrealistic profits on cryptocurrency investments.
