Binance-backed Trust Wallet recently issued a warning about a potential high-risk attack vector targeting Apple iMessage users. According to the self-custodial crypto wallet provider, dark web hackers are exploiting a zero-day exploit on Apple’s default messenger to target iPhone and iOS users. The exploit has reportedly been present on Apple devices since their inception.
While Trust Wallet did not disclose the source of this information or confirm any crypto losses incurred by users, they advised taking precautionary measures by disabling iMessage from Apple settings until a security patch is released. As of now, Apple has not responded to or refuted these claims.
To safeguard against this potential iMessage exploit, Trust Wallet recommends turning off iMessages by navigating to Settings -> Messages -> toggling iMessage off. It is advisable to maintain this precaution until Apple issues a security patch. Your security is our priority.
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), a division of the United States Department of Commerce, previously reported conducting investigations into Trust Wallet’s iOS version, highlighting a security flaw.
Trust Wallet is not the only crypto wallet provider to warn users about Apple-related issues. Another Bitcoin wallet solution, UniSat, recently alerted users about a fake version of its decentralized storage solution on the iOS app store.
In a separate incident, a side-channel attack vector known as GoFetch was discovered last month, allowing bad actors to steal cryptographic keys through a CPU cache bug in Apple’s MacBook computer chips. While Apple has acknowledged the issue, details on a security patch are yet to be released. As a precaution, industry experts recommend users with significant crypto holdings to transfer their assets off iOS devices.
