Theta Labs has established a multi-year agreement with Seoul Women’s University (SWU) to provide its AI research lab access to Theta EdgeCloud’s decentralized GPU computing power.

The partnership will enable the AI to Everything lab at SWU to utilize Theta EdgeCloud’s decentralized network of GPUs, reducing costs and enhancing computational power for their AI research in healthcare, bioinformatics, and finance.

Built on the Theta Network, Theta EdgeCloud is a hybrid cloud-edge computing platform powered by decentralized physical infrastructure networks (DePIN). It leverages over 30,000 distributed nodes to offer scalable, cost-effective GPU computing resources for AI, media, and entertainment applications. This allows users to access a global network of decentralized computing power. Last year, the project received a $1 million investment from a venture capital firm.

The partnership with SWU’s AI labs demonstrates how decentralized networks can address real-world issues, according to Theta Labs.

Reducing Costs in AI Research

With rising GPU costs for AI research, universities find traditional methods like maintaining in-house GPU clusters or using expensive cloud services increasingly unsustainable. Theta Labs CEO Mitch Liu highlights that Theta EdgeCloud can reduce these costs by 50-70% and significantly boost research productivity.

The message from universities is unanimous: GPU access for AI research is a major financial and logistical hurdle. By lowering these barriers and accelerating setup times, we’re enhancing innovation across the entire AI ecosystem.

Professor Minseo Park, who will lead the collaboration, mentioned that Theta’s decentralized GPU network bridges the gap between academic goals and practical constraints. This collaboration is seen as a significant step in democratizing AI research.

By tapping into this shared resource, our students and academic team can focus on pushing the boundaries of AI applications without restraint.

DePIN Sector Seeing Growth

The multi-year agreement with SWU builds on Theta Labs’ previous partnerships with other universities, including KAIST University and Yonsei University, which use Theta EdgeCloud for various AI applications. This new collaboration further strengthens Theta EdgeCloud’s presence in academia.

The DePIN sector has gained significant traction in the cryptocurrency space. Market forecasts predict its value to reach $3.5 trillion by 2028. DePIN technology eliminates intermediaries and empowers users, making it a promising area of development.

Early-stage DePIN projects have attracted substantial venture capital funding this year, raising over $246 million across 70 deals by August 2024, marking a 296% increase year-over-year.
