Tezos, the self-upgradable proof-of-stake (PoS) blockchain, has introduced βTezos X,β an upgrade aimed at enhancing usability and utility.
Tezos X is envisioned as a significant evolution of the original Tezos blockchain. This upgrade aims to create an integrated blockchain ecosystem with improved performance, composability, and interoperability.
Tezos X Vision β The Evolution of Tezos
Tezos is a smart contracts blockchain platform that launched after a $232 million initial coin offering (ICO) in 2017. While it hasnβt reached the anticipated heights, the project remains under active development.
The new vision aims to transform Tezos from a monolithic blockchain, where every node replicates everything, to a modular design with an integrated experience. This βmodu-lithicβ ecosystem ensures high decentralization, with specialized modules allowing different user groups to interact efficiently.
In this design, accounts, applications, and transaction history migrate to the βcanonical rollup,β freeing the layer-1 chain to handle only consensus and settlement.
βFreeing up layer 1 resources means everything can run faster without requiring powerful hardware to secure the network,β Tezos developers wrote.
This approach not only boosts on-chain performance but also enhances Tezosβ composability and interoperability.
Tezos X in the Works Since 2022
Developers have been working on scaling Tezos since early 2022 through Smart Rollups. This scaling technology allows for a dedicated second layer to execute transactions while the L1 ensures consensus and settlement.
βFree from the burden of also having to process every transaction and computation, the L1 would become significantly faster, with even lower latency. The lighter load also means bakers would still be able to secure the network with low-spec hardware, ensuring decentralization,β Tezos developers noted.
A dedicated Data-Availability layer is also crucial in this mission, ensuring that the Tezos mainnet can handle vast amounts of data from rollup users in a fully decentralized manner. With these features, Tezos X envisions a single canonical rollup capable of handling all network activity.
The rollout of Tezos X is expected to continue through 2026.
