South Korean authorities are moving forward with the extradition of Do Kwon, the former CEO of Terra, following a recent court ruling in Montenegro. Kwon’s appeal to overturn the decision approving his extradition to South Korea was denied by an appeals court in Montenegro.
Previously, a Montenegro court had ordered Kwon’s extradition to South Korea for criminal prosecution, after revoking an earlier decision to extradite him to the United States. Despite the U.S. Justice Department’s plans to challenge the verdict, the latest ruling allowing Kwon’s extradition to South Korea is considered final.
Kwon, along with former Terraform Labs financial executive Han Chang-Joon, was arrested in Montenegro last March after Interpol issued a red alert. The pair was detained for over six months on forgery charges related to fake Costa Rican passports. Chang-Joon has since been extradited to South Korea, where prosecutors are investigating Kwon’s involvement in Terra’s ecosystem collapse in 2022.
One of the company’s former developers testified that Kwon was aware of the risks associated with the project. This development marks the end of a year-long debate over which country would first try Do Kwon for his alleged involvement in Terra’s collapse.
