Solana Meme Coin Scams Net Hackers Estimated $500,000
Over 15 X accounts have been recently compromised, resulting in hackers launching scam Solana meme coins and pocketing an estimated $500,000. According to blockchain sleuth ZachXBT, a threat actor has been targeting Solana meme investors and X pages, making about half a million dollars by promoting scam tokens via hacked social media pages.
Popular Accounts Breached
Several well-known accounts, including Brett, Kick Streaming, and Alex Blania, were breached by the hackers. In each case, the hijacked page would announce a new coin and share a contract address, inviting unsuspecting victims to invest SOL.
Investigation Reveals Common Link
ZachXBT has spotted over 15 incidents since November 26, all leading back to a concentrated effort from an unknown bad actor. By mapping out the deployer address for each scam, ZachXBT discovered that two-thirds of the incidents were directly connected.
The attacker attempted to obfuscate the funding source by bridging back and forth between Solana and Ethereum.
How Hackers Gained Access
According to ZachXBT’s investigation, the scammers deployed scare tactics to steal passwords and other credentials. The hacker would mimic X support agents, claiming users violated terms of use and copyright policies. This tactic created a sense of urgency, leading users to provide sensitive information.
As X has become a prominent platform for users and projects, hackers have leveraged its prominence to bombard users with phishing links, preying on the fear of losing social media accounts.
