Ross Ulbricht Calls for Roger Verβs Release Amid Bitcoin Tax Fraud Allegations
Ross Ulbricht, the founder of the infamous online black market Silk Road, has expressed his support for Roger Ver, also known as βBitcoin Jesus,β who was recently arrested in Spain for allegedly committing Bitcoin tax fraud. Ver, an early Bitcoin investor, was indicted by the U.S. Department of Justice for allegedly underreporting his Bitcoin gains and failing to file the correct tax returns.
The indictment claims that Ver committed various tax violations worth $50 million. Ver, who renounced his U.S. citizenship in 2014, has denied the charges and accused the U.S. government of overreach.
Ulbrichtβs Plea for Verβs Release
Ulbricht, who spent over 11 years in a maximum-security prison for his role in the online black market, recently tweeted in support of Ver. βRoger Ver was there for me when I was down and needed help. Now Roger needs our support,β Ulbricht said.
Ulbricht also expressed his opinion on the matter, stating that βno one should spend the rest of their life in prison over taxes. Let him pay the tax (if any) and be done with it.β
Potential Consequences for Ver
The tax allegations against Ver could result in a prison sentence of up to 20 years. The DOJ has charged Ver with three counts of mail fraud, two counts of tax evasion, and three counts of false tax returns. Each mail fraud charge carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
Expert Opinion
Crypto lawyer James Murphy, also known as MetaLawMan, agrees with Ulbricht on the matter. Murphy expects the Justice Department to drop the case, stating that it is unusual for prosecutors to pursue someone for miscalculating their βexit taxβ 10 years after they renounced their citizenship.
βThe prosecution of @rogerkver appears to be part of the Biden adminβs coordinated attack on crypto. I would expect the Trump DOJ to drop the case.β
