Ronin Network, the blockchain designed for Web3 gaming, has successfully migrated its Ronin Bridge to Chainlinkβs Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP). This update marks a significant step in enhancing the security and scalability of the platform, which was developed by Sky Mavis, the team behind the popular blockchain game Axie Infinity.
Key Details of the Migration
As of April 25, the Ronin Bridge now utilizes Chainlinkβs CCIP as its primary cross-chain infrastructure. This decision follows a validator community vote in October 2024, where Chainlink was chosen over other contenders like LayerZero and Axelar. The migration underscores Roninβs commitment to bolstering its ecosystem for developers and users alike.
Currently, Chainlink is securing over $450 million worth of assets on the Ronin blockchain. This integration is a critical step in ensuring the platformβs long-term security and usability within the multi-chain ecosystem.
Statement from Sky Mavis
“Migrating to Chainlink CCIP is a major unlock for Ronin as we scale into the most accessible and secure gaming and consumer chain in Web3. Developers get cross-chain infrastructure to build fast and secure, while users can easily bridge assets across the multi-chain ecosystem, opening the door to the next generation of games and apps,” said Trung Nguyen, CEO and co-founder of Sky Mavis.
Improved Security After Past Challenges
Roninβs decision to adopt Chainlink CCIP comes in the wake of a major security exploit in 2022, during which hackers stole over $600 million worth of cryptocurrency. This event highlighted the need for stronger security measures. Additionally, the platform had paused transactions on the bridge in August 2024 due to suspicious activity involving a $10 million withdrawal.
By integrating Chainlink CCIP, Ronin aims to significantly improve the security of bridged assets. The network also plans to leverage other Chainlink solutions to enhance user experience and drive broader adoption, including its efforts to expand into decentralized finance (DeFi).
Enhanced User Functionality
With the migration complete, users can now transfer a variety of supported tokens, including AXS, YGG, BANANA, USDC, and Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC), to and from the Ronin network. These transfers are facilitated through the Chainlink CCIP-powered Ronin Bridge application, providing a seamless and secure experience for users.
Legacy Bridge Still Active
Despite the successful migration, the deprecated Ronin Bridge tab remains visible. According to the Ronin Network team, this is due to a number of users who have yet to claim their tokens on Ethereum. The team has kept the legacy bridge accessible to process these pending withdrawal requests.
Looking Ahead
The migration to Chainlink CCIP positions Ronin as a more secure and developer-friendly blockchain for the next generation of Web3 games and applications. By focusing on interoperability, security, and user experience, Ronin is poised to strengthen its presence in the blockchain gaming and DeFi sectors.
