Nigerian Court Postpones Binance Tax Evasion Case to June
A Nigerian court has rescheduled the tax evasion case against the Binance crypto exchange to June 14. The delay was due to the absence of Tigran Gambaryan, Binanceβs head of financial crime compliance, who was not present at the scheduled hearing.
As of now, no reason has been given for Gambaryanβs absence. Moses Ideho, the lawyer representing the revenue service, expressed confusion over why Gambaryan was not produced by the Nigerian prison service.
This postponement follows a previous ruling where the court allowed Gambaryan to represent Binance in the tax evasion trial. Binance and its executives, Gambaryan and Nadeem Anjarwalla, face four counts of tax evasion, including failing to register with Nigeriaβs Federal Inland Revenue Service.
βPrior to their trip to Nigeria, Gambaryan and Anjarwalla were promised safe passage for their meetings. Despite those assurances, the two were unlawfully detained by Nigerian authorities,β
Binance CEO Richard Teng criticized Nigerian authorities for setting what he described as a βdangerous precedentβ by inviting executives to the country and then detaining them. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has also accused Binance and its executives of laundering over $35 million.
Gambaryan and Anjarwalla were arrested in February and charged with criminal violations. Anjarwalla escaped custody but was later extradited from Kenya to Nigeria.
As part of the crackdown on crypto trading, Binance was ordered to delist the naira from its peer-to-peer facilities. An Abuja High Court also required the exchange to submit detailed data on all local crypto users on its platform.
