Nexon’s Blockchain Arm Unveils New Token for Web3 Game Ecosystem Growth

South Korean video game developer Nexon’s blockchain subsidiary, NEXPACE, has launched a new cryptocurrency to boost user engagement and drive ecosystem growth in its web3 game, MapleStory Universe.

In an announcement on August 27, NEXPACE introduced the NXPC token, designed to enable players and community members to contribute directly to in-game content creation, a role traditionally held by game developers.

MapleStory Universe, a web3 spin-off of Nexon’s 2003 2D online game MapleStory, is built on the Avalanche blockchain and integrates non-fungible tokens (NFTs) at its core. The NXPC token aims to facilitate interaction with in-game items, promoting a “natural flow of community-driven growth,” according to the company. While specific details were not disclosed, it is anticipated that the token will also be based on the Avalanche blockchain, consistent with the game itself.

Nexon’s venture into the cryptocurrency space is not new. The company has previously purchased over 1,700 Bitcoins for approximately $100 million. At that time, Nexon CEO Owen Mahoney stated that the purchase “reflects a disciplined strategy for protecting shareholder value and for maintaining the purchasing power of our cash assets.”
