Zero-knowledge proofs platform NEBRA has introduced its Universal Proof Aggregation (UPA) solution to the cryptocurrency industry.

NEBRA UPA, which is now live on the Ethereum blockchain, is a protocol that merges zero-knowledge proofs into a single proof, offering a cost-effective method for on-chain verification. This protocol aims to enhance scaling and privacy across blockchains via proof aggregation, according to the NEBRA team.

β€œLow throughput and high verification costs are major obstacles preventing applications from fully leveraging ZKP technology. But with NEBRA UPA, ZKP is no longer a future aspiration – it is a solution that is available and in use right now,” said Shumo Chu, co-founder and CEO of NEBRA.

Applications of UPA in zkEVMs and RaaS Protocols

Protocols and projects benefiting from UPA’s solution include zero-knowledge virtual machines (zkEVMs), co-processors, roll-up as a service (RaaS) solutions, and consumer applications. For instance, the WorldCoin project uses ZKP to verify user uniqueness without revealing personal information. Other notable projects in the ZKP ecosystem include Polygon zkVM, ZK Sync, and Starknet.

Addressing Cost Issues

Zero-knowledge proof (ZKP) costs can be prohibitive. However, UPA aims to reduce these costs significantlyβ€”from $20 to $2 for Ethereum and from $2 to $0.2 for layer-2 solutions. This reduction makes ZK proofs more accessible for everyday crypto use cases, such as buying coffee, thereby empowering developers and increasing adoption across decentralized applications.

β€œWho wants to pay $20 for a ZK proof for a coffee purchase? But when the cost falls to mere cents, innumerable possibilities open up for developing decentralized applications,” said Nebra co-founder Yi Tong.

NEBRA has raised a total of $4.5 million in funding from crypto venture capital firms, including Andreessen Horowitz, Bankless Ventures, and Nascent. The platform plans to deploy UPA v2 to top layer-2 solutions (L2s) to enable more decentralized applications (dApps) to benefit from reduced costs for on-chain ZKP use.
