MiniPay, a blockchain-based wallet built on Celo, has introduced support for USDT and USDC stablecoins with its newly launched feature, Pockets. Announced on Wednesday, Pockets is an upgrade that enables one-click stablecoin swaps on MiniPay, a non-custodial stablecoin wallet available in Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, and Ghana.
MiniPay Reaches Milestone with Pockets Launch
With the Pockets feature, MiniPay users can now swap between Celo Dollar (cUSD) and top stablecoins like USDT and USDC. This new functionality is a result of collaboration with Mento Labs, the developer behind the EVM blockchain Mento. Mento supports cUSD and other decentralized stable assets, including cEUR, cREAL, eXOF, and cKES, and powers Pocketsβ new “Drag & Swap” feature. Users can swap between supported stablecoins by simply dragging one pocket into another, with minimal fees.
Mento Labs CEO Markus Franke commented on the launch:
“MiniPay Pockets enable seamless transactions with stablecoins to onboard users to the digital economy. Mento Labs is very proud to support MiniPay users with easy and efficient stablecoin swaps on the Mento Platform,”
Bringing Web3 Technology to Users
As stablecoin adoption grows, Pockets represents a significant milestone that could drive further Web3 growth. This development follows MiniPayβs expansion from Nigeria to include Kenya, Ghana, and South Africa. According to MiniPay, users in these four countries have activated over 3 million MiniPay wallets in less than a year, highlighting the rapid growth of the stablecoin payments and transfers market in the region.
Operaβs EVP of Mobile, JΓΈrgen Arnsen, noted:
“From the outset, MiniPay has been about simplicity and financial empowerment, and our collaboration with Mento to create Pockets is another big step forward in that missionβ¦ Weβre bringing advanced Web3 technologies to a Web2 audience in the African continent by packaging them in ways that are comprehensible and accessible.”
MiniPay’s Discover Page
In addition to Pockets, MiniPay offers access to decentralized applications (dApps) through its Discover Page feature. This feature organizes native dApps for easy access, allowing users to leverage Web3 technology for everyday uses such as paying bills and utilities. By enabling users to manage these needs without cashing out to local currency, MiniPay has increased access to benefits across Universal Basic Income protocols, gaming, savings applications, and more.
