Midnight Society Shuts Down, Ending NFT-Driven Game Project Deadrop
The ambitious NFT-driven game project Deadrop has come to an end, as Dr Disrespectβs Midnight Society announces its shutdown after three years in development.
A Community-Driven Vision Fails to Materialize
Midnight Society, co-founded by Guy βDr Disrespectβ Beahm, had envisioned a community-driven NFT shooter game. However, the studio has now closed its doors, leaving over 55 developers without a project and the game unreleased. In a statement, the studio expressed gratitude to its community members and apologized for not reaching its ultimate goal.
βToday we are announcing Midnight Society will be closing its doors after three incredible years.β
Deadrop: An Ambitious but Doomed Project
Deadrop was a PvPvE extraction shooter set in a world where βthe 80s never ended.β The game was originally funded through NFT sales, with players buying Founders Access Passes to test early builds. Players could also buy NFT-based visors as in-game identities and trade them on platforms like OpenSea. However, the project’s shutdown has left the value of these NFTs uncertain, and it’s unclear who will refund purchases.
A Troubled History
Midnight Society was founded in 2021 by Beahm, Call of Duty veteran Robert Bowling, and Halo designer Quinn Delhoyo. However, the project hit turbulence in 2024 when Beahm left the company after admitting to sending inappropriate messages to a minor on Twitch. The incident marked a significant setback for the project, ultimately contributing to its demise.
What’s Next for Midnight Society Developers?
The studio is now helping its developers find new jobs, encouraging anyone with job openings to reach out. With the shutdown of Midnight Society, the focus shifts to the uncertain future of NFT-driven game projects and the impact on the gaming industry and cryptocurrency market.
