Jian Wen is currently facing charges of laundering Bitcoin in a London court in connection with an alleged $6 billion investment scam. Her defense team claims that she was manipulated by the true mastermind behind the scheme.
Allegations and Claims
The prosecution alleges that Wen, working for her employer Yadi Zhang, converted Bitcoin to cash through middlemen and used the funds to purchase a flat in Dubai. Wen, on the other hand, maintains that she had no knowledge of the criminal origin of her employer’s wealth when over Β£1.7 billion in Bitcoin was seized from her residence.
According to Wen’s defense lawyer, Mark Harris, Zhang was the true mastermind behind the scheme. Harris described Zhang as a “super villain” who manipulated Wen into unwittingly participating in the fraudulent activities.
Defense Argument
The defense team argued that Zhang, who fled the U.K. in 2020 after arriving in 2017 using a passport from St. Kitts and Nevis, was a “master of deception.” Wen, who previously worked at a fast food restaurant, was portrayed as an unintentional scapegoat in Zhang’s elaborate scheme that targeted around 130,000 investors in China.
Harris revealed that Zhang’s ultimate goal was to establish a kingdom in Liberland, a territory between Croatia and Serbia, with Wen unwittingly playing a crucial role in her plans.
