LayerZero Labs is joining forces with Initia Labs to establish an interoperability standard for Cosmos. Announced on Wednesday, this collaboration aims to connect Cosmos SDK chains and LayerZero-enabled chains, promoting omnichain interoperability. This development follows closely after Flare integrated LayerZero V2, which now connects to over 75 blockchains.

Why an Interoperability Standard for Cosmos?

The LayerZero team emphasizes that their targeted interoperability solution is designed as a Cosmos SDK Module, rather than a smart contract. This design choice allows LayerZero to support Cosmos chains with both VM and non-VM structures.

This new standard will enable developers to leverage any LayerZero-supported chain, extending both existing and new decentralized applications (dApps) to and from Cosmos chains. The initiative aligns with Cosmos’ vision of an β€œInternet of Blockchains,” Initia Labs’ concept of β€œinterwoven” chains, and LayerZero’s aim for omnichain interoperability.

Understanding Omnichain Interoperability

Omnichain interoperability allows blockchains, oracles, bridges, and other networks within the ecosystem to communicate seamlessly. This capability enables a single transaction to span multiple blockchains without any additional user intervention.

While ecosystems like Polkadot and Cosmos have mechanisms that support interoperability, applications within these ecosystems still require omnichain solutions like LayerZero to communicate with external chains. Omnichain interoperability means a message can move from Cosmos to Solana, and then to Ethereum or another blockchain, requiring the end user to sign just one transaction.

LayerZero’s Role in Omnichain Communication

As an omnichain interoperability protocol, LayerZero has facilitated over 135 million cross-chain messages. These messages have spanned more than 80 blockchain networks, with over 200 applications utilizing the network for messaging purposes. The protocol’s technology is crucial for applications on chains that cannot achieve native communication.

The Cosmos SDK supports custom-built blockchains, also known as appchains, tailored for developers. LayerZero’s integration with Cosmos marks a significant step toward achieving full omnichain interoperability.
