Tyler Winklevoss, co-founder of crypto exchange Gemini, expressed surprise over Kamala Harris’s absence from the crypto roundtable meeting on Aug. 8.
“All she needed was an internet connection,” Tyler remarked on X.
Kamala Harris, the current U.S. Vice President and the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, faces Donald Trump, the former president who has been vocal about his crypto-friendly stance. Trump has pledged to end Joe Biden’s perceived “war on crypto” if elected.
Biden has withdrawn from the race, endorsing Harris, which many see as an opportunity for her to redefine her party’s stance on crypto. However, she missed the Bitcoin 2024 conference, attended by Trump, and has yet to openly discuss her views on cryptocurrency. Observers note that Operation Chokepoint 2.0 seems to be ongoing.
Notably, the U.S. has around 50 million crypto holders who want their votes to influence the country becoming a leading destination for blockchain and crypto innovation.
“Technical difficulties?” Winklevoss wondered.
The crypto community is eager for Harris to clarify her stance and provide direction on what her administration would mean for the industry. Trump has been clear, stating he would never sell the U.S. government’s Bitcoin stake, fire Gary Gensler, and support policies aimed at establishing a Bitcoin reserve.
But did Harris need to attend the meeting? Maybe not, since the Aug. 8 roundtable included some of the most senior White House officials. Still, the meeting was virtual, and Tyler, along with his brother Cameron Winklevoss, criticized her absence.
“I understand that she’s on the campaign trail, but the meeting was virtual. All she needed was an Internet connection. Technical difficulties?” Tyler posted on X.
Tyler also dismissed the Crypto4Harris campaign, which claims to be a “grassroots” effort advocating for a nuanced crypto policy in Harris’s presidential campaign.
The most interesting part of the Crypto4Harris plan is their “nuanced” crypto-policy approach. As if being nuanced is the appropriate corrective measure for an Administration that tried to nuke our entire industry. I guess it was a mostly peaceful war on crypto.
The roundtable attendees included Wally Adeyemo, Deputy Secretary of the Treasury, Lael Brainard, U.S. National Economic Council Director, and Kristine Lucius, Kamala Harris’s director of legislative affairs. Industry figures like Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse, Circle’s Jeremy Allaire, and Coinbase’s chief legal officer Paul Grewal were also present.
Executives from Uniswap, Stellar Development Foundation, Kraken, and crypto venture capital giant Andreessen Horowitz attended as well.
