Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin shared insights on the upcoming stage of the blockchain roadmap, known as the Purge. This new stage is focused on streamlining the network structure and reducing the load on nodes. A key element of this stage is the implementation and development of EIP-6780, which was introduced during the recent Dencun hard fork. This update optimizes the SELFDESTRUCT opcode, enhancing security and simplifying protocol implementation.
Buterin highlighted the importance of efforts to simplify the Ethereum protocol by eliminating complexity and enhancing security. Recent optimizations within Ethereum include a Geth client removing unnecessary code, fixing the “empty accounts” issue with EIP-7523, and implementing a 50 GB limit on stored information through Dencun’s blob storage window.
In addition, Buterin suggested the use of a precompilation mechanism for Ethereum contracts, enabling logic to be implemented directly by clients instead of EVM code. This approach has been successful in supporting ZK-SNARK-based applications.
Looking ahead, Buterin emphasized the need for internal scaling and parallelization of rollup processing to further enhance the network’s capabilities. The recent Merge update, marking a significant milestone in transitioning to the proof-of-stake algorithm, introduced the possibility of blob transactions.
