The Indonesian National Post Office has launched the country’s first Non-Fungible Token (NFT) postage stamp, depicting the bird of paradise, Cenderawasih.

Indonesia’s First NFT Postage Stamp

On September 27th, Pos Indonesia, the National Post Office of Indonesia, introduced the nation’s first NFT postage stamp. This release is in celebration of the 79th anniversary of the Indonesian Post, located in Bandung. The initiative is a collaborative effort with the Indonesian Ministry of Communications and Information.

This innovative stamp leverages blockchain-based technology, offering philately enthusiasts around the globe a unique addition to their digital collections. The stamp, valued at approximately $9.90, features the Cenderawasih bird, also known as the bird of paradise. This species, renowned for its vibrant, multi-colored feathers, is native to Papua Island, Indonesia.

Limited Edition NFT Stamps

According to Pos Indonesia, these NFT stamps will be issued in limited quantities and presented in a booklet format.

“Hopefully young people who are already native digital can return to collecting stamps but in the form of NFT,” said Faizal Rochmad Djoemadi, Director of Pos Indonesia, during the launch ceremony.

Faizal explained that the NFT stamp is designed as a collector’s item rather than for practical use in mailing packages or letters. He expressed hope that this innovative approach would spark interest in stamp collecting among the younger generation.

Physical and Digital Collectibles

In addition to the digital NFT version, the stamp will also be available in a physical form. Collectors can purchase it through the Indonesian Post’s official website by scanning a QR code, leading them to an order form for the NFT stamp.

With this launch, Indonesia joins Thailand and Malaysia as the third country in Southeast Asia to introduce NFT stamps. Both neighboring countries have previously released their own digital postage stamps.
