Georgia’s leading opposition party, the United National Movement, has introduced United Space, an identity app powered by Rarimo, ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections on October 26. The app is designed to leverage blockchain technology to address low voter turnout in Georgia by incentivizing citizens to participate, regardless of their political affiliations.
The United Space app aims to digitize the Public Service Hall as a platform for experimenting with Universal Basic Income, with proceeds intended to benefit citizens. This initiative comes with the promise of a blockchain-powered system that rewards civic engagement.
Key Features of the United Space App
Powered by the zero-knowledge social protocol Rarimo, United Space plans to implement a liquid democracy model. This model enables citizens to vote anonymously through the app and earn rewards for their participation. The app is a modified version of an existing Rarimo zero-knowledge proof-of-citizenship solution known as Freedom Tool.
Unique Aspects of Freedom Tool
Freedom Tool stands out by allowing users to issue their own identity by uploading encrypted national ID data onto an on-chain registry. This ensures a voting system free from privacy violations and potential voter manipulations, with blockchain acting as a safeguard against poll tampering.
The system prohibits external parties, including the government, from tracking user activities within the app. Given Georgia’s current political climate, this level of anonymity is crucial.
Political Context and Implications
Georgia’s democracy has faced challenges, with concerns about authoritarianism and influence from Russia. The United Space app addresses these issues by providing a secure and anonymous way for citizens to engage in the electoral process.
Citizens can earn rewards not just for voting but also for other forms of civic involvement. The app features a “Points and Ownership” program where users can collect points and become shareholders in strategic points.
Vision for the Future
Giorgi Vashadze, MP and leader of the United National Movement, envisions a significant transformation for Georgia’s democratic system. He believes that United Space will help make Georgia one of the most robust democracies in the world, offering unprecedented privacy, access, and ease of use for citizens as they engage with the electoral system and everyday state services.
“United Space will help make Georgia one of the most robust democracies in the world. It will provide unprecedented privacy, access, and ease of use for citizens as they engage both with the electoral system and everyday state services,” said Vashadze.
Kitty Horlick, Director at Rarilabs, mentioned that the app empowers citizens to become direct stakeholders, facilitating their involvement in the democratic process, state assets, and public services.
