FIFA Collect, the official digital collectibles platform of FIFA, has announced plans to upgrade its infrastructure by migrating to a new EVM-compatible blockchain, referred to as the “FIFA Blockchain.” The migration is scheduled to begin no earlier than May 20, 2025, with users receiving prior notifications.

Why FIFA is Migrating to a New Blockchain

The decision to transition to the FIFA Blockchain is aimed at improving the platform’s performance, scalability, and capacity for future innovation. This move will allow FIFA Collect to offer enhanced features and accommodate a growing user base. Following the migration, users will retain access to their existing digital assets without any disruption, as long as they log in to their accounts post-upgrade.

What Users Need to Know

For current FIFA Collect users, no immediate action is required. However, users who have previously exported their collectibles must reimport them before May 20, 2025, to ensure their assets are included in the migration process. FIFA has announced that it will temporarily re-enable the import feature for this purpose. After the deadline, manual migration may require customer support and additional verification steps.

As part of the upgrade, USDC balances can continue to be spent until the migration date. Post-migration, users will only have the option to withdraw their remaining USDC balances, as spending functionality will cease.

Impact on Algorand Wallet Users

During the migration, FIFA Collect will experience a temporary downtime of approximately 12 hours. After the transition, wallets based on the Algorand blockchain, such as Pera and Defly, will no longer be supported. Instead, users will need to connect via MetaMask or any other EVM-compatible wallet using WalletConnect.

Additionally, all collectibles currently listed for sale on the platform will remain listed on the new blockchain unless manually delisted by users before the cutoff date. Importantly, FIFA has confirmed that the migration process will be free for all users.

New Features and Wallet Compatibility

FIFA’s migration to an EVM-compatible blockchain opens the door to improved wallet compatibility and the potential for new features to enhance user experience. This development aligns with FIFA’s commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology to engage its global fanbase.

Speculation on a FIFA Cryptocurrency Token

In March 2025, FIFA President Gianni Infantino hinted at the organization’s interest in launching its own cryptocurrency token, tentatively referred to as the “FIFA coin.” This announcement was made during a Crypto Summit at the White House. Infantino suggested that such a token could help deepen engagement with FIFA’s widespread audience. While this concept remains in its early stages, it has sparked discussions about FIFA’s evolving role in the cryptocurrency space.

Preparing for the Migration

To ensure a smooth transition, users are encouraged to:

  • Reimport any exported collectibles before May 20, 2025.
  • Familiarize themselves with EVM-compatible wallets like MetaMask.
  • Monitor notifications from FIFA Collect for updates regarding the migration process.

The migration to the FIFA Blockchain marks a significant step forward for FIFA Collect, promising improved scalability and innovation for its users while showcasing FIFA’s growing interest in blockchain technology and cryptocurrency.
