Less than thirteen minutes after the launch of Ethereum’s Dencun upgrade, someone uploaded the entire Bee Movie script on the mainnet for just $14.

Ethereum developer Dan Cline claims to be the first to upload the full-length script on the blockchain, taking advantage of the upgrade aimed at reducing fees on Ethereum layer 2s.

Cline uploaded the Bee Movie script to the Ethereum network shortly after the Dencun upgrade went live. The transaction cost $13.88 and was completed on March 13, according to Blobscan data.

Introduced as part of Ethereum’s Dencun upgrade, blobs are a core feature that reduces transaction costs on layer-2 networks significantly. This upgrade allows layer 2s to use blobs instead of calldata function, resulting in cheaper costs for users.

While Cline’s Bee Movie script will only be available on the Ethereum network for a few weeks, several layer-2 networks, including Starknet, ZkSync, Optimism, and Base, have implemented blobs to reduce transaction fees.

Base lead developer Jesse Pollak reported that transaction fees on the Base network have fallen from $0.31 to near-zero after integrating blobs.

Industry veterans have praised the Ethereum Dencun upgrade, which includes eight EIPs to improve network functions. EIP-1153 introduces a transient storage system, while EIP-4788 increases transparency by storing the root of each Beacon Chain block in a smart contract.

Developers anticipate that data provided by EIP-4788 will be used for new features in bridges and staking pools.

Fee reductions on swaps and transactions on Ethereum layer 2s will be implemented once networks integrate EIP-4844. As of now, swap fees on Arbitrum and Polygon are still around $1.16 and $1.46, respectively.
