Ethereum Developers to Retire Holesky Testnet, Introduce Hoodi for Future Upgrades

The Ethereum Foundation has announced plans to retire the network’s largest testnet, Holesky, and replace it with a new trial environment called Hoodi. This decision follows technical challenges encountered during the recent Pectra upgrade, which significantly impacted Holesky’s functionality.

Holesky’s issues were not isolated. Similar problems were observed on Sepolia, Ethereum’s second-largest test environment. However, developers managed to apply a hotfix to Sepolia, allowing it to continue functioning. These testnets are critical for simulating and debugging upgrades like Pectra before they go live on Ethereum’s mainnet.

Challenges with Holesky’s Validator Lifecycle

While Holesky has since finalized, the validator exit process presents a significant hurdle. Exited validators will take approximately one year to fully clear the validator set. This extended timeline makes it impractical to use Holesky for testing the complete validator lifecycle, including deposits, exits, and consolidations, within a reasonable timeframe.

Introducing Hoodi: The Next Step in Ethereum Testing

To address these challenges, Ethereum developers are moving forward with a new testnet called Hoodi. According to Paritosh Jayanthi, EF DevOps engineer, and Tim Beiko, EF core coordinator, Hoodi will serve as the primary environment for testing Pectra and other future upgrades.
