The EFCC, Interpol, and Kenyan police are currently in negotiations for the extradition of a Binance executive. Recent reports from local media suggest that Kenyan law enforcement agencies will be handing over Nadeem Anjarwalla to Nigerian authorities within a week. The EFCC, Interpol, and Kenya Police are in the final stages of the negotiation process, with details expected to be finalized soon.
According to the EFCC chairman, the transfer of the prosecution of Binance executives sends a strong message about the agency’s commitment to preventing distortions in the country’s forex market. Law enforcement agencies suspect that exchange employees may be held responsible for the company’s actions and could face legal action as defendants.
Anjarwalla, who serves as Binance’s Regional Head for East and West Africa, was arrested by Nigerian authorities in February 2024 along with another exchange employee. The executives were accused of tax evasion and money laundering. Despite initial reports of Anjarwalla’s extradition, his wife denied these claims, and law enforcement agencies have not confirmed the information.
In a dramatic turn of events, Anjarwalla reportedly escaped at the end of March using a Kenyan passport to leave Nigeria. However, Nigerian security forces located him in Kenya and arrested him at the request of the Nigerian Bureau of Interpol.
Binance has urged Nigerian authorities to maintain a constructive dialogue with all stakeholders after halting services in naira. The situation continues to evolve, with updates expected in the coming days.
