The Canadian province of British Columbia is taking steps to regulate electricity consumption by cryptocurrency miners to address concerns about high energy use and limited economic benefits. Minister of Energy, Mines, and Low Carbon Innovation, Josie Osborne, announced that the government is looking to control the energy consumption associated with cryptocurrency mining, which she believes does not offer significant job or economic opportunities.
The proposed legislative changes would give the government the authority to restrict or regulate the electricity usage by cryptocurrency miners. The aim is to prevent the sector’s rapid expansion from putting a strain on the electricity supply for homes and businesses in the region. In December 2022, the province announced a temporary suspension of new electricity connections for cryptocurrency mining projects for 18 months, affecting around twenty-one projects that collectively requested 11,700 gigawatt hours of power annually.
Minister Osborne emphasized the need to work with British Columbia Hydro to ensure a secure electricity supply for the province’s future, particularly for energy-intensive cryptocurrency mining operations that do not contribute significantly to local job creation. The decision to limit cryptocurrency mining activities follows similar actions taken by Quebec and Manitoba, making British Columbia the third jurisdiction in Canada to impose restrictions on this industry.
The province’s focus is on preserving electricity for essential uses like electric vehicles, heat pumps, and other electrification projects that reduce carbon emissions and promote job creation and economic growth. Despite being the fourth-largest electricity producer in Canada, with a generating capacity of 18,250 megawatts, British Columbia faces challenges in ensuring future power generation reliability, as highlighted in a report by the North American Electric Reliability Corporation.
