The web browser Brave has introduced its own blockchain-based top-level domain (TLD) called .brave, marking a significant milestone in the world of decentralized technology. This innovation is launched in collaboration with Unstoppable Domains and operates on the Polygon network. The new feature is designed to enhance digital identity ownership and streamline cryptocurrency transactions for Brave’s more than 85 million monthly active users.

Brave’s Blockchain-Based Domain Launch

Brave has become the first major browser to deploy its own on-chain TLD, allowing users to mint their personalized .brave domains as non-fungible tokens (NFTs) on the Polygon blockchain. These domains grant permanent ownership without requiring renewal fees, simplifying the process of managing digital identities and cryptocurrency transactions.

Users can replace complex cryptocurrency wallet addresses with easily readable names, making crypto payments and transfers more user-friendly. The new domains will be integrated into the Brave Wallet and the browser’s version 1.81, which is scheduled for release on August 5, 2025.

Cross-Network Compatibility

The .brave domains are designed to work across multiple blockchain networks, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, Base, and Sonic, among others. This interoperability ensures users can leverage their domain across various ecosystems, enhancing flexibility and usability.

Decentralized Website Hosting

In addition to simplifying crypto payments, holding a .brave domain allows users to host decentralized websites on the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS). These websites can be accessed directly through the Brave browser, eliminating hosting fees and further empowering users with control over their online presence.

Brave’s CTO and co-founder, Brian Bondy, emphasized that the introduction of blockchain-based TLDs is more than just a technological upgrade—it represents a step toward giving users greater ownership, privacy, and control. Future Plans for ICANN Registration

Brave and Unstoppable Domains are exploring the possibility of obtaining ICANN general top-level domain (gTLD) registration by 2026. If successful, this registration would enable .brave domains to function seamlessly in both traditional Web2 environments and decentralized Web3 ecosystems, bridging the gap between two distinct internet paradigms.

Integration with Cardano

In recent developments, Brave Wallet has expanded its features by integrating support for Cardano (ADA). This partnership with Input Output Global allows users to send, receive, and swap ADA directly within the Brave Wallet. Additionally, ADA holders can participate in governance activities, making Brave Wallet a comprehensive tool for managing assets and engaging with blockchain networks.
