Bitstamp Secures MiFID Multilateral Trading Facility License

Cryptocurrency exchange Bitstamp has reached a significant milestone by securing a MiFID Multilateral Trading Facility (MTF) license from Slovenia’s Securities Market Agency. This enables the exchange to offer EU-regulated crypto derivatives for both institutional and retail investors, including perpetual swaps.

Understanding MiFID Regulation

The MiFID regulation governs traditional financial markets across the European Union. It encompasses stocks, securities, and derivatives, applying to various trading platforms, investment managers, and banks. Bitstamp’s acquisition of the MiFID MTF license marks a significant step as it is among the first crypto exchanges to obtain this license, allowing the platform to provide more sophisticated products to its customers.

Enhanced Security and Compliance

In an announcement on Oct. 24, Bitstamp emphasized that the license demonstrates the strength of its security and safety mechanisms, corporate governance, internal regulatory and anti-money laundering controls, and client protection. Jean-Baptiste Graftieaux, Global Chief Executive of Bitstamp, highlighted that this achievement is a testament to Bitstamp’s safety, security, trustworthiness, and compliance. He noted that the license enables Bitstamp to support a broader range of trading and investment strategies, particularly benefiting institutional investors.

“The license demonstrates the strength of Bitstamp’s security and safety mechanisms, corporate governance, internal regulatory and anti-money laundering controls, and client protection.”

Global Expansion and Future Prospects

Earlier in March, the Monetary Authority of Singapore granted a provisional crypto license to Bitstamp as the platform continues to expand its global footprint and presence in Asia. The exchange received the highly coveted Major Payment Institutional approval, allowing the firm to offer Digital Payment Token services in Singapore.

This expansion into new markets and the acquisition of regulatory licenses underscore Bitstamp’s commitment to compliance and security, setting a benchmark for other cryptocurrency exchanges. Investors, both new and experienced, can look forward to more sophisticated trading options and enhanced security measures on the platform.
