The court has rescheduled the hearing for a Binance official detained in Nigeria over tax evasion allegations to April 19. Tigran Gambaryan, in charge of Binance’s financial crime prevention efforts, is accused of failing to pay value-added and corporate income taxes. Binance has requested that Gambaryan, who lacks decision-making authority, not be held accountable while discussions with Nigerian officials continue.

Gambaryan is also accused of aiding customers in evading tax obligations using Binance’s platform. He will be monitored by Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. The court has postponed Binance’s hearing to April 8.

Nadeem Anjarwalla, another senior Binance official detained alongside Gambaryan, departed Nigeria last month. Both individuals visited Nigeria in February following an invitation from Nigerian authorities to discuss cryptocurrency operations amidst government efforts to regulate crypto exchanges.

Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, has experienced a rise in cryptocurrency adoption as its local currency depreciated significantly. The government responded to the price surge by imposing restrictions on crypto exchanges.

In other news, the IMF has advised Ukraine to finalize its crypto regulation update by the end of 2024, according to officials.
