An Airbnb host has implemented a new rule after discovering that her guests had been mining cryptocurrency at her property.

The host, Ashley, shared on social media that her guests left the house in excellent condition and even received a five-star review. However, she was taken aback when she received an electricity bill amounting to $1,500.

Upon reviewing footage from her external security cameras, Ashley noticed that the guests had brought in over ten computer rigs and set up a makeshift electric vehicle charging station.

After contacting the guests and providing evidence, they admitted to mining cryptocurrency during their three-week stay, reportedly earning over $100,000.

No more crypto mining!

Ashley initially struggled to get the guests to cover the bill, but Airbnb intervened, ensuring that the payment was made. Following the incident, she added β€œno crypto-mining” and β€œno electric vehicle charging” to her house rules.

Other Airbnb hosts have reportedly implemented similar measures in response to the energy-intensive nature of cryptocurrency mining, which is known to be a significant drain on electricity resources.

β€œIt was cheaper for them to rent a house than to pay for that electricity,” said Ashley in her social media post.
