Top institutional holders are taking a dominant position in Ethereumβs strategic reserves, with the Ethereum Foundation leading the charge.
Rising Institutional Interest in Ethereum
While corporate Bitcoin (BTC) reserves have been a key trend recently, Ethereum (ETH) is steadily gaining traction. As of June 19, institutional ETH reserves reached 1.190 million ETH, valued at approximately $3 billion. This accounts for over 1% of Ethereum’s total supply, according to data from Strategic ETH Reserve.
“Institutional ETH holdings are growing, with top entities controlling the majority of reserves.”
The five largest holders dominate these reserves, collectively owning more than 70% of all institutional ETH. The Ethereum Foundation leads with 269,431 ETH, followed by SharpLink, a Nasdaq-listed gaming company, which acquired 176,271 ETH on June 13 and has staked 95% of its holdings.
Key Institutional Ethereum Holders
SharpLinkβs recent acquisition highlights the growing corporate interest in Ethereum. On June 19, Status, an Ethereum-based messenger and wallet, joined the list of top holders by acquiring 23,066 ETH, valued at $2.9 million.
Other notable entities holding substantial Ethereum reserves include:
- Layer-1 network PulseChain
- Crypto exchange Coinbase
- The Ethereum-focused Golem Foundation
- The U.S. government, which holds close to 60,000 ETH, primarily from asset seizures
Ethereum Gains Traction Among Institutions
Although Bitcoin remains the preferred choice for corporate reserves, Ethereum is increasingly becoming a favored asset. As the most established altcoin, Ethereum is carving its place in institutional portfolios.
For example, Michiganβs state pension plan recently allocated $10 million to Ethereum. Publicly traded companies such as Bit Digital, BTCS, Intchains Group, and KR1 have also added Ethereum to their holdings, demonstrating its growing appeal.
The Role of Transparency in Driving Adoption
The Strategic ETH Reserve initiative tracks major institutional holders through publicly visible wallets. By promoting transparency, this initiative aims to encourage broader adoption of Ethereum in corporate and institutional portfolios.
As Ethereum continues to gain momentum, an increasing number of firms are likely to consider adding the asset to their strategic reserves, further cementing its position as a leading cryptocurrency investment.
