Blast Network Phases Out Safe’s Front-End for Multisig Wallets

Blast, a prominent Layer-2 network developed by Blur founder Pacman and backed by Paradigm, has announced the discontinuation of its service agreement with self-custody wallet provider Safe. This decision stems from concerns over third-party risks and usability as the platform prepares to integrate its own multisig wallet solution directly into its mobile platform, Blast Mobile.

Transitioning Away from Safe’s Front-End

In a recent update shared by the Blast team, users were informed that the service agreement with Safe would not be renewed. As a result, those who previously accessed their multisig wallets via Safe’s front-end now have two immediate alternatives:

  • Utilize BrahmaFi’s hosted front-end for multisig wallets.
  • Self-host their own front-end to mitigate supply chain risks.

The Blast team emphasized their commitment to improving wallet accessibility and security for their community, stating, β€œThat’s why we’re building multisig functionality directly into Blast Mobile β€” bringing secure wallet access to the entire Blast community.”

Safe’s Restructure and Industry Challenges

The decision to end the service agreement follows a period of significant change for Safe, formerly known as Gnosis Safe. In mid-April, Safe co-founder Lukas Schor announced a company-wide restructure, which included parting ways with 14 team members. Schor attributed the layoffs to growing internal complexity, which impacted the company’s ability to maintain its expected pace of development.

This restructuring also came on the heels of a major security incident involving a $1.43 billion theft from a leading crypto exchange. The breach was linked to a compromised Safe developer environment. Reports suggest the attacker, believed to be associated with North Korea’s TraderTraitor group, utilized malware embedded in a fake stock simulator to exploit session tokens from a developer’s laptop.

What’s Next for Blast Users?

As Blast transitions to its own multisig solution, users are encouraged to explore the available options for ensuring continued wallet functionality. For those seeking enhanced security, self-hosting is a viable method to reduce third-party risks. Meanwhile, BrahmaFi offers a streamlined hosted option for users who prefer a simpler setup.

By integrating multisig functionality directly into Blast Mobile, the platform aims to eliminate reliance on third-party solutions while enhancing security and usability for its growing user base.
