Google Introduces Zero-Knowledge Proofs to Enhance Privacy in Google Wallet

Google is integrating zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs) into its Google Wallet, enabling users to verify their age on websites without sharing sensitive personal details, such as birthdates. This new feature demonstrates a significant step toward making cryptographic identity tools more accessible and discreet for everyday users.

Rob Viglione, co-founder of Horizen Labs, emphasized the importance of this development:

“When tech giants like Google start seamlessly integrating Zero-Knowledge Proofs into their apps, it’s a clear signal that privacy-driven innovations are becoming mainstream. Private Age Verification Through Zero-Knowledge Proofs

Google’s implementation of ZKPs will power a new system for private age verification through its Digital Credential API. This allows users to confirm they meet age requirements for services, such as online dating platforms like Bumble or alcohol purchases, without revealing additional personal information.

In its official announcement, Google explained the importance of this privacy-focused approach, stating:

“We’re developing a system that not only verifies age but does it in a way that protects your privacy. There is no way to link the age back to your identity.”
