Ethereum’s Pectra Upgrade Faces Bugs on Testnets, Developers Fix Issues
Ethereum’s highly anticipated Pectra upgrade, the most significant update since its transition to proof-of-stake, encountered bugs on two major testnets, Holesky and Sepolia. However, developers quickly addressed and fixed the issues, ensuring the upgrade remains on track.
The Pectra upgrade was deployed on Sepolia’s testnet on March 5, marking the final dress rehearsal for Ethereum’s biggest hard fork after The Merge. However, the upgrade faced a bug with Sepolia’s custom deposit contract, which split transaction transfer and deposit actions instead of batching the data into a single blockchain message.
Validators have already upgraded and the chain is now operating normally.
Tim Beiko, Protocol Support Lead at the Ethereum Foundation
According to Tim Beiko, ETH devs patched the issue approximately six hours after Pectra was deployed on the testnet. Beiko also noted that some explorers, wallets, or other infrastructure providers may experience issues until they upgrade their nodes.
Etherscan, Ethereum’s primary block explorer, confirmed that Sepolia resumed block production with transaction settlement after the issue was fixed. Sepolia was the second testnet affected by Pectra’s trial, following a validator misconfiguration on Holesky’s network in February.
Tips for Ethereum users:
- Stay updated on the latest Ethereum news and upgrades
- Follow reputable sources, such as Etherscan, for real-time information on block production and transaction settlement
- Be prepared for potential delays in the mainnet deployment of the Pectra upgrade
Holesky and Sepolia are the final testnets before the Pectra upgrade is deployed on Ethereum’s primary chain. Initially planned for early April, the mainnet deployment may be delayed due to the issues encountered on the testnets.
