Abstract Chain Addresses Recent Exploit, Assures Users of Isolated Incident

Abstract Chain, a layer-2 network on the Ethereum blockchain, has confirmed an investigation into reports of wallet drain issues shared by users on Tuesday, February 18. The complaints, which flooded Abstract’s Discord server, included claims of lost funds, with some individuals stating they had lost over $100,000 in Ether (ETH).

The delay in Abstract’s response to the issue led to rising tensions among users, who demanded refunds and explanations. However, the team assured users that the issue was isolated to the on-chain fantasy game Cardex, a blockchain-based game that launched on the L2 chain last week.

Investigation Underway, Cause Identified

0xBeans, an Abstract team member, stated that the core Abstract Global Wallet was unaffected and that the issue stemmed from Cardex “mishandling” important wallet credentials. The individual also promised updates once findings became available.

“This issue seems to be isolated to an app (seems to be Cardex, please do not interact for the time being). We are working to get to the bottom of it.”

0xBeans further advised users to revoke their sessions with Cardex and avoid interacting with the app until further notice. Users were also advised to withdraw assets pending a resolution.

Background and Funding

Abstract Chain was released by Pudgy Penguins’ parent company Igloo Inc. in January. The L2 chain was built using ZKsync’s zero-knowledge-powered developer toolkit. The project has received backing from investors, including Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund, with a total of $11 million in funding last July.

Tips for Users

If you have interacted with Cardex, take the following steps to protect your assets:

  • Revoke your sessions with Cardex immediately.
  • Avoid interacting with Cardex until further notice.
  • Withdraw assets pending a resolution.
