Gumi Invests $6.6 Million in Bitcoin to Expand Blockchain Staking

Japanese mobile game studio Gumi Inc. is bolstering its presence in the crypto space with a significant Bitcoin purchase. The Tokyo-listed firm has announced that its board of directors has approved a plan to acquire Bitcoin worth around $6.58 million (JPY 1 billion) by May to enhance its blockchain node operation business.

The investment is part of Gumi’s strategy to expand its node operation business and strengthen its position in the web3 domain. The company plans to utilize its Bitcoin holdings for staking through the Babylon protocol, aiming to benefit from potential price growth and earn revenue from staking and validator rewards.

Strengthening Crypto Presence

Gumi’s move marks a significant step in the company’s crypto adoption journey. The studio has set its sights on becoming the first publicly listed company in Japan to participate as a validator in the Babylon staking protocol in Q2 of the fiscal year ending in April.

Through this initiative, we aim to further strengthen our node operation business and enhance our presence in the web3 domain.

Asian Companies Adopting Crypto

For instance, Remixpoint added $1.38 million worth of Bitcoin to its portfolio in December 2024, bringing its total crypto holdings to $27.59 million. Metaplanet’s adoption of a Bitcoin standard in April 2024 led to a significant surge in its stock, and the company is now targeting 21,000 Bitcoin by 2026.

  • Gumi plans to use its Bitcoin holdings for staking through the Babylon protocol.
  • The company will regularly assess its crypto holdings and record any gains or losses in its financial statements.
