Solo Bitcoin Miner Wins Big, But There’s More to the Story
A solo Bitcoin miner recently made headlines by solving a block and claiming the entire reward of 3.146 BTC. However, it was later revealed that the miner’s hashrate was donated by over 300 members of a fundraiser for the 256 Foundation, a non-profit organization aiming to make Bitcoin mining more accessible and simple for people.
The Lucky Break
The solo miner’s success was initially reported as a remarkable achievement, with some outlets claiming that a $400 home miner had beaten “once in a lifetime” odds to solve the block. However, it was later revealed that the miner had used the aggregated hashrate from over 300 miners, donated during a 10-hour fundraiser event.
Why Solo Mining is Rare
In the early days of Bitcoin, it was possible to mine hundreds of coins using a regular PC. However, as the mining difficulty increased, the need for specialized hardware and large-scale mining operations became apparent. Today, the mining difficulty is over 90 trillion times higher than it was in 2009, making it extremely challenging for solo miners to solve blocks.
Bitcoin Mining Evolution
Over the years, Bitcoin mining has evolved from a hobbyist activity to a large-scale industrial operation. The introduction of application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) in 2013 marked a significant shift towards centralized mining. Today, a few large mining pools control a significant portion of the hashrate, making it even more difficult for solo miners to compete.
256 Foundation’s Mission
The 256 Foundation was created in February 2024 with the goal of making Bitcoin and freedom tech accessible for all. The organization aims to “dismantle the proprietary mining empire” and provide free and open-source software for mining. By educating people about Bitcoin and providing accessible mining solutions, 256 Foundation hopes to bring Bitcoin back to the people.
FutureBit Apollo Devices
The entities participating in the fundraiser mining event used FutureBit Apollo devices, designed to allow solo miners to solve blocks again. The devices are seen as an opposition to the centralization of mining, and the FutureBit founder views it as a David and Goliath situation.
