Cannes Prepares to Embrace Cryptocurrency Payments Ahead of Ethereum Community Conference

Cannes Mayor David Lisnard has announced plans to train local merchants in accepting cryptocurrency payments as part of the city’s broader Web3 strategy. This initiative comes ahead of the 8th edition of the Ethereum Community Conference (EthCC), scheduled to take place from June 30 to July 3, 2025.

In preparation for the event, the city government will organize training sessions for merchants to integrate crypto payment systems. The first session, set for February 4 at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, will cover key areas such as:

  • Technical implications of cryptocurrency adoption
  • Legal considerations for accepting digital currencies
  • Accounting and tax implications of crypto payments

Enhancing Local Commerce and Tourism

A “crypto-friendly” merchant map will also be developed, providing EthCC attendees and other tourists with a guide to businesses in Cannes that accept digital currencies. This initiative is expected to attract over 6,500 registered participants and a total attendance of over 10,000.

Mayor Lisnard sees this as an opportunity for local businesses to tap into a global, tech-savvy audience while enhancing Cannes’ reputation as a premier destination for major events.

Some commentators speculate that Lisnard’s pro-crypto stance may be part of a larger political strategy as he positions himself for the 2027 French presidential election.
