LastPass Data Breach Leads to $12.38 Million Stolen from Users
A recent attack linked to the 2022 LastPass data breach has resulted in the theft of $12.38 million from users. According to blockchain sleuth ZachXBT, the hackers stole millions in Ethereum from over 100 wallet addresses between December 16 and 17. The stolen funds were then quickly swapped from Ethereum to Bitcoin using multiple instant exchanges.
LastPass Security Breaches
LastPass, a password management service designed to secure cryptocurrency wallets, suffered two major hacks in 2022. The first hack occurred in August, followed by another in October, resulting in unauthorized access to customer keys, API tokens, multi-factor authentication seeds, and other sensitive security information.
In January 2023, users filed a class action lawsuit against LastPass, alleging that the company failed to protect user data and adopted lax security protocols. The lawsuit marked the beginning of a series of security incidents that continued to plague the company.
Previous Security Incidents
In April 2023, a crypto holder reported a $50,000 theft, blaming LastPass for the incident. Later, in October, 25 victims lost $4.4 million to wallet drainers, prompting further criticism of LastPass’s security measures.
The latest incident has raised concerns about future attacks, as hackers continue to leverage information stolen in 2022. The crypto community has been reminded of the existing security threats, and experts are urging users to take action to protect their assets.
