Kyoto’s Ryuganji Temple Embraces NFTs to Promote Japanese Buddhist Culture
Starting November 1, Ryuganji Temple in Kyoto is offering 1,500 free animated NFTs to promote Japanese Buddhist culture globally. These non-fungible tokens (NFTs) will be available for claim on the official website. Additionally, visitors can collect the NFT directly at the temple starting November 9, 2024, at 14:00 JST. On-site, a QR code will be provided for the public to scan and claim their free NFT.
Details of the Ryuganji NFT
The Ryuganji NFT includes a video showcasing the templeβs gate and main hall, alongside a clip of animated brushstroke calligraphy created by the templeβs head priest. To obtain the NFT, users must fill out a brief survey on the website and connect their blockchain wallet. Although the NFT itself is free, there will be a gas and service charge. Users can purchase the NFT using a credit card or Ethereum. The NFT adheres to the Ethereum protocol’s ERC-721 NFT standard.
Project Background and Goals
This initiative is part of Goshuin Japan’s project to introduce local Japanese temples, such as Ryuganji Temple, to a global audience by transforming goshuin into NFTs. Goshuin refers to a handwritten calligraphy stamp that commemorates a visit to a Buddhist temple, traditionally collected by worshippers during pilgrimages.
There are currently around 80,000 shrines and 77,000 temples in Japan. A standard goshuin includes the templeβs name, date, and a phrase, typically handwritten by a monk, making each one unique, similar to NFTs.
Ryuganji Temple’s History and Vision
Ryuganji Temple, founded in 1616, was built on the former residence of Shibukawa Harumi, the first astronomer of the Edo Shogunate. It is known locally as a Jodo Buddhist Temple in Kyoto.
“By sharing the charm of Japanese culture with the help of people from abroad, both Japan and the world will become more invigorated,” said Ryuho Ikeguchi, the head priest of Ryuganji Temple.
Head priest Ryuho Ikeguchi hopes that more people will discover the temple through collecting the NFT, as he believes temples are a vital part of Japanese culture.
Aligning with National Strategy
This project aligns with Japanβs new Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s plan to leverage blockchain technology and NFTs to revalue local assets like food and tourism on a global scale.
