Christie’s recently hosted a charity auction with proceeds going to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The auction, titled “Bridging Worlds: Digital Art Beyond Borders,” featured 11 pieces of digital art sold as NFTs.

The charity auction ran from October 23 and concluded on October 30, 2024. According to the final bidding prices listed, the auction raised a total of $51,387 from digital art sales.

Featured Artworks and Artists

The auction was curated by Micol Ap and showcased digital artworks donated by several notable artists including Erick Calderon (also known as Snowfro), IX Shells, Mario Klingemann, and Niceaunties among others.

Highlight Pieces and Bidding Prices

The digital piece that received the highest bidding price was “Niceburg” by Singaporean artist Niceaunties. This artwork, which features a video made of AI art, portrays grannies living in an arctic tundra called Niceburg. The video includes narration and visuals of ice melting and grannies interacting with animated stuffed animals. “Niceburg” sold for 4.5 ETH, equivalent to $11,908.

Another notable piece was IX Shells’ “Rompeolas — Resurgiendo a través de la Resistencia”, translating to Sea Wall — Resurgence Through Resistance. This digital moving art features an array of orange and white dots forming a 3D wave structure against a black background. IX Shells, known for exploring themes of identity and nature, sold her piece for 3 ETH, equivalent to $7,850.

Christie’s promotional video highlighted “Crush” by Andreas Gysin. This artwork shows overlapping coding with various font colors moving in sync. Each letter is composed of a group of other keyboard letters and symbols. “Crush” was sold for 0.25 ETH, equal to $654.

Additional Artworks

The auction also featured non-moving digital art, such as “Handle With Care” by Vinnie Hager and “APT 47B” by Iskra Velitchkova.

Christie’s partnered with Switzerland for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency’s national partner for Switzerland, to support the charity auction. Switzerland for UNHCR also promoted the auction, encouraging users to bid on their favorite digital art pieces.
