Peter Todd, a Canadian cryptographer and developer, was recently identified as the mystery creator of Bitcoin in an HBO documentary. This revelation has reportedly forced him into hiding.
HBO Documentary Claims Todd is Satoshi Nakamoto
On Oct. 9, the HBO documentary film “Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery” aired, generating significant buzz. The documentary concluded by suggesting that Peter Todd is the creator of Bitcoin, also known as Satoshi Nakamoto.
Todd has strongly refuted these claims. Following the film’s release, the Canadian developer has reportedly gone into hiding due to safety concerns.
Todd Denies Being Satoshi
In remarks shared with a publication, Todd stated he is not Satoshi and that the film’s conclusion has made him a target. He has faced harassment, including multiple requests for money, with one individual sending 25 emails seeking funds to pay off a loan.
“Obviously, falsely claiming that ordinary people of ordinary wealth are extraordinarily rich exposes them to threats like robbery and kidnapping,” Todd said in the interview.
He added that Satoshi “didn’t want to be found,” and emphasized that it is unhelpful to spotlight people for something they are not.
Todd mentioned that the documentary’s maker, Cullen Hoback, used the Satoshi link for marketing purposes. However, Hoback claims there is a strong case for the inferences made in the film, despite Todd’s denials.
Ongoing Interest in Satoshi Nakamoto’s Identity
Interest in unmasking the identity of Satoshi Nakamoto has been a constant in the crypto space since the individual, or group of people, behind the worldβs largest digital asset, disappeared from the public eye in 2010.
Todd is not the only person to have been suggested as the Bitcoin creator. Before the HBO film, speculation had shifted from cryptographers Len Sassaman and Nick Szabo to Blockstream founder Adam Back. Others identified over the years include Hal Finney, a pioneer in the Bitcoin community who received the first-ever BTC transaction.
In March 2024, a UK court ruled that Australian computer scientist Craig Wright is not Satoshi.
