Bitcoin Developer Peter Todd Sparks Meme Coin Frenzy with Sarcastic Reply

Bitcoin developer Peter Todd’s snarky reply to a user’s post on X about the name of his pets has ignited a viral meme coin, soaring past 130% in the last 24 hours. Despite an HBO documentary claiming Todd is Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin, Todd has firmly denied these claims.

The Meme Coin Surge

The meme token, ticker $YOURMOM, inspired by Todd’s sarcastic post, has surged over 4000%, according to GeckoTerminal data. The Solana-powered token is trading at $0.002647 with a market cap of $2.4 million, just hours after its launch on October 9.

The $YOURMOM token emerged when a user on X mentioned Todd’s presence in the Solana memesphere. They inquired if Todd had any pets and their names, aiming to fuel the meme token trend of naming coins after animals.

“To all the Solana memecoin degens spamming my mentions, I have one pet and it’s name is your mom.”

Todd’s sarcastic response led meme token creators to quickly capitalize on it. Within 16 hours, four Solana tokens titled YourMom, some featuring Todd’s picture, were created.

Impact on Other Meme Coins

Similar trends have occurred before. Meme coin creators were quick to create tokens based on Len Sassaman and his cats, Odin and Sasha, when Polymarket bettors speculated Sassaman was Satoshi Nakamoto.

Following the HBO documentary naming Todd as Satoshi instead of Sassaman, prices for Sassaman-inspired meme coins plummeted. According to CoinMarketCap, the token SASHA dropped 88.21% in 24 hours, while Odin’s token saw a nearly 90% decline, as reported by GeckoTerminal.

HBO Documentary Controversy

On October 8, HBO’s documentary “Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery” claimed Peter Todd was Satoshi Nakamoto. The documentary producer, Cullen Hobak, pointed to cryptic online posts by Todd, including one where he called himself “the world’s leading expert on how to sacrifice your Bitcoins.” This was interpreted as a veiled admission that he destroyed access to the estimated 1.1 million BTC attributed to Nakamoto.

The documentary also fueled speculation by claiming Todd once accidentally posted from Satoshi’s account on the BitcoinTalk forum in 2010. Despite these claims, Todd has consistently denied being Bitcoin’s creator. On October 8, he responded to a comment on X, stating, “I am not Satoshi.”
