Turkey and Russia Ban Discord Over Child Abuse and Criminal Activity Concerns
Both Turkey and Russia have recently taken measures to ban the widely-used communication platform, Discord, citing concerns over child abuse and other criminal activities.
Turkey’s Ban on Discord
In Turkey, authorities have blocked access to Discord following a court ruling that linked the platform to incidents of child sexual abuse and obscene content. Reports of violent content, including posts related to a recent double homicide, have further intensified public outrage.
In a statement, YΔ±lmaz TunΓ§, Turkeyβs Minister of Justice, emphasized the nationβs commitment to protecting children and society from harmful online material. He addressed broader concerns over social media platforms being used for criminal activities.
“Social network providers and websites that broadcast in our country and have millions of users must also comply with the laws and rules of the Republic of Turkey. No one has any privileges.”
Russia’s Crackdown on Discord
Just hours after Turkey’s ban, Russia also imposed a ban on Discord as part of its wider crackdown on non-compliant tech companies. The Russian government had previously fined Discord for failing to remove prohibited content and has now escalated its actions by banning the platform entirely. This move places Discord alongside other major platforms like Facebook and Instagram on Russia’s banned list.
Impact on Cryptocurrency Community
Discord has not only faced scrutiny for general criminal activities but also for its association with crypto-related crimes. In recent years, the platform has been linked to various scams within the cryptocurrency community. For instance, in 2021, cybersecurity firm Kaspersky warned of a scam that targeted Discord users, directing them to fraudulent crypto exchanges.
Scammers have also exploited Discord to promote pump-and-dump crypto schemes. The U.S. Department of Justice previously filed a case against seven individuals who orchestrated a $100 million pump-and-dump crypto scheme using Discord.
Additionally, malicious actors have created fake Discord channels to scam investors. One notable incident involved a fake channel for the crypto project Access Protocol, leading to a loss of $880,000 for investors. Other cryptocurrency projects like OpenSea, Renzo, and Polygon have also experienced breaches on their Discord accounts, with hackers aiming to use them for criminal activities.
