Zilliqa Developers Announce Permanent Fix for Weekend Blockchain Halt

In a recent update, Zilliqa developers confirmed that they have implemented a permanent fix for a bug that halted transactions over the weekend. This bug, identified on September 29, prevented the blockchain from creating new blocks, leaving users unable to conduct transactions or access their funds.

Zilliqa’s Response to the Bug

In an X post, Zilliqa developers reassured the community that they were diligently working on the issue. They stated:

“We’ve encountered another issue with the network. We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate all the feedback and reports. We have identified the bug and will resolve the issue as soon as possible. Rest assured – all funds are safe!”

Recent Technical Setbacks

This incident follows another bug reported on September 27, which slowed down block production but did not result in a full network halt. Developers quickly deployed a fix on the same day, restoring normal operations. However, the recurrence of these technical issues has raised concerns about the network’s stability.

Some community members have speculated that these issues might be connected to the recent Zilliqa 2.0 upgrade, designed to enhance network speed and cross-chain compatibility. Zilliqa developers have clarified that the recent disruptions are unrelated to the upgrade.

Current Network Status

As of now, the network has yet to resume full operations and deploy the permanent fix. However, block production has been restored for validators. Developers have assured users that their funds remain secure.

Impact on ZIL Token

The recent technical issues have affected the price of Zilliqa’s native token, ZIL, which has slipped over 2.3% in the past 24 hours.

Recurring Block Generation Issues

Block generation hiccups have been a recurring issue for Zilliqa. Similar problems have been reported over the past year, including a slowdown in block production in May, followed by a brief transaction halt. Another disruption occurred in December 2023, with block production slowing down for nearly half a day.

Similar Incidents in the Blockchain Space

It’s worth noting that other blockchain networks have faced similar issues. Earlier this year, Ethereum’s layer 2 solution, Starknet, experienced an outage that prevented on-chain transactions. More recently, the layer 1 protocol, Canto, faced consecutive outages due to issues with its consensus mechanism.
