World Maritime Day 2024: Navigating the Future with Safety First

The World Maritime Day 2024 is set to take place on September 26, 2024. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) will host a parallel event in Spain from October 20-22, 2024. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the 1974 SOLAS Convention, a key IMO treaty regulating maritime safety, with the theme “Navigating the Future: Safety First.”

Linking to UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development

The theme for this year’s World Maritime Day aligns closely with the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

SDG 7: Ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and clean energy
SDG 8: Promoting sustainable economic growth
SDG 9: Building resilient infrastructure and sustainable industrialization
SDG 13: Combating climate change and its impacts
SDG 14: Conserving and sustainably using the oceans, seas, and marine resources

“This theme allows us to focus on the full range of safety regulatory implications arising from new and adapted technologies and the introduction of alternative fuels,” noted IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim.

Climate Week NYC: Art Shows and Events

As part of Climate Week NYC, two art shows are being prepared for World Maritime Day. These United Nations General Assembly events will feature collaborations with the world’s first Climate Change Museum, CUHK Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change, Climarte, Lord Howe Island Museum, Teiduma, SEACHA, and its partner Thai-based Changing Climate Changing Lives Film Festival. These events will be held at the Putnam History Museum and Havre de Grace Maritime Museum.
