The Polygon Discord channel experienced a security breach on Saturday, Aug. 24, but the platform’s team managed to regain control within about four hours.

The initial hack led Polygon’s Chief Information Security Officer, Mudit Gupta, to issue a warning on X.com, advising users to avoid clicking on any links in the official Discord channel until the issue was resolved.

PSA: Do not click on any links in the @0xPolygon community discord until further notice. It has been compromised and we’re trying to get back ownership.

This incident caused concern among Polygon users. One user, shadabk2005, noted that scam links were being posted in the channel.

@0xPolygon hey is your discord hacked? There are scam links being posted in the announcements channel and I got a timeout for highlighting this in the support channel.

Approximately four hours later, Gupta updated his original post to inform users that the Polygon team had regained control of the channel and were working on cleaning up the changes made by the hackers.

Update: We’ve regained access and currently cleaning up all the changes made by the hacker to make sure they can’t come back.

Discord is a popular messaging app among crypto communities, alongside X, Telegram, and Reddit. Many projects use the platform to share important updates, making it a target for scammers.

Attacks on the platform have become more frequent. For instance, in July, the Ethereum liquid restaking platform Renzo lost ownership of its Discord channel to bad actors. The extent of financial loss from that hack remains unclear.

In another case, hackers added a fake Discord link on the website of security auditing firm CertiK. This link redirected users to a malicious server designed to drain funds from their wallets.

In September 2023, CertiK reported that scammers had stolen over $6 million through attacks on compromised crypto Discord channels. These attackers often used the channels to spam fake token airdrops, which contained phishing links.
