Noah Perlman, Binance’s Chief Compliance Officer, recently addressed the legal issues involving Nigeria and Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan. Perlman spoke about the ongoing situation, expressing uncertainty about a swift resolution.

β€œWe don’t really see a clear roadmap to getting him back in the near term,” said Perlman during an interview with CNBC, referring to Tigran Gambaryan.

Perlman mentioned that Binance is doing everything possible to bring Gambaryan back to the United States. However, the U.S. government holds significant power in these negotiations. Gambaryan, who has a background with the IRS, remains in legal limbo.

β€œI have faith in the U.S. government to do the right thing here,” Perlman stated.

The situation worsened when Gambaryan collapsed in court on May 24, raising suspicions of malaria. Despite a court order to transfer him to a hospital, Gambaryan remains in prison, where inadequate medical facilities hinder proper diagnosis and treatment.

β€œWe suspect he may have malaria. He slumped in court today,” Perlman noted.

Perlman emphasized Binance’s willingness to cooperate with authorities. He stated that if Binance had made mistakes in the past, the company is ready to address them.

β€œIf [Binance] has done something wrong in the past, and I’m not saying that we have or we haven’t, but if we have, we want to come to the table and resolve it,” Perlman said. β€œAnd our message to the Nigerian government is you don’t need to hold on to Tigran.”

Background

Binance executives Tigran Gambaryan and Nadeem Anjarwalla were arrested in February and charged with criminal violations by the Nigerian government. Gambaryan is currently awaiting trial, while Anjarwalla escaped custody but was eventually extradited from Kenya to Nigeria.

The two executives were in Nigeria to discuss regulatory issues on behalf of Binance amidst the government’s crackdown on cryptocurrency trading platforms. Following these discussions, they were arrested and detained without their passports.

Gambaryan and Anjarwalla, Binance’s regional director for Africa, faced four counts of tax evasion, including failing to register with Nigeria’s Federal Inland Revenue Service.

β€œI don’t know the status of Nadeem,” Perlman said in the interview. β€œWe haven’t had contact with him since he has left.”
